The uniqueness of PostBus Switzerland Ltd
I first got to know PostBus many years ago in Wildhaus. Back then, I would never have guessed just how dangerous those yellow vehicles were. You shouldn't get too close as they carry an infectious virus – and then who knows what might happen…….
The buses in Wildhaus looked a great deal different to those in the Netherlands. I had never heard of the makes FBW and Saurer. What's more, the number plates all began with a P! I was well and truly hooked and there was no way back. I wanted to get to know these vehicles better. And get to know them I certainly did. The Swiss Postbuses became my hobby. I wrote about them. I wrote a number of articles as well as a booklet. I also made a small contribution to the anniversary book, and have built up a large collection of Postbus postcards and Postbus models.
However, there's one unique feature of PostBus in particular that I have never forgotten. One beautiful day in early summer, we took the Postbus from Davos to Zernez. We were travelling on P 24367, the RH-type Poly III – brand new at the time. Our daughter was only young and the bus driver pulled over suddenly on the southern side of the Flüela Pass. There was no bus stop, no traffic, nor were there any cows blocking the way. So what was wrong? The driver turned around and said: "Did you see that? There's a family of marmots over there with their young." This was a bus driver who had taken the time to point out a very special Swiss sight. You don't get much more unique than that!
