The town of Delémont has been focusing on turning its station into a development and transfer hub for many years. This is now supported by the Delémont urban planning project, with the aim of coordinating future residential and transport development in the area as effectively as possible. In 1997, an urban planning competition was launched by the town of Delémont in cooperation with all of the partners concerned (SBB, PostBus, Swiss Post) to find a solution for the station area. The winning project has ensured the comprehensive, consistent and sustainable urban development of the station area and noticeably improved connections between the different modes of transport. At the same time, the ASTRAC SBB project, which also had its roots in a competition, extended and upgraded the public facilities at the station (the station building, platforms with ramps, new commercial premises, signage, disabled access, etc.). Thanks to the two competitions, the town has achieved a high quality of urban development and architecture.
The measures have enabled long-term improvements in the public facilities, image, identity and attractiveness of the transport hub and the surrounding area, as well as in the basic combined mobility requirements. The success of the measures can also be seen in the shift from private motorized transport to environmentally friendly modes of transport and in the great increase in the number of passengers using public transport. The development of the station area has not yet been completed, however. On 29 June 2009, the local government approved a planning loan for the refurbishment of the bus station, as well as for the building of bicycle parking facilities. These measures will enable further improvements in the quality and attractiveness of the transport hub and its range of services.
