Palm Express
St. Moritz –Menaggio–Lugano
Discover one of the most contrasting trips, from icy glaciers to swaying palms. The scenic journey leads over the Maloja Pass, down through the Val Bregaglia valley to Chiavenna, Italy – and further along the Como and Lugano lakes.
The scenic Palm Express journey starts in St Moritz and takes you on a 4-hour trip from the glaciers of Engadine to the swaying palms of Lugano. And with a view to almost tropical beauty; past the deep blue and dreamlike lakes of the Upper Engadine and to Lombardy in northern Italy (at the border you require either an identity card or passport).
Enjoy a stop at the world-famous and cosmopolitan resort St Moritz – where you meet with first-class hotels, exclusive shopping possibilities and a rich assortment of sport and leisure offers – after which, you traverse the Engadine and view its typical Silvaplana and Sils villages on the way to Maloja.
Entering Val Bregaglia you can’t help but notice the Mediterranean influence – and the valley was home to the famous Giacometti artist family, as well as the Italian artist, Giovanni Segantini, who found great inspiration in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Crossing the Castasegna municipality border, you then find yourself in Italy and have time to stroll through the Chiavenna market stands and enjoy refreshments under the first heart-warming palm trees (PostBus stop Chiavenna, Stazione).
The Palm Express now carries you past the deep blue waters of the Mezzola and Como lakes on to the quaint Sorico, Gera Lario, Domaso, Gravedona, Dongo and Menaggio holiday villages. In addition, you enjoy views of the beautiful Lago Lugano, before you cross the border back into Switzerland at Gandria. This picturesque Mediterranean-like little village on the Monte Brè is practically only a stone‘s throw from Lugano, the metropolis of canton Ticino.
